THE DAILY DEAL QUESTIONS THE CREDIBILITY OF EMIL I. BERNARD, HEAD OF GLOBAL AIRLINES CORP.
Surprise US Airways Bid Is Latest Quest for Quixotic Figure
August 10, 2001--New York, N.Y.--This week Emil I. Bernard, head of Global Airlines Corp., was the talk of the airline industry, following his surprise bid of $9.8 billion on Sunday for US Airways, an offer he upped to $10 billion Wednesday. Yet in researching this bid, The Daily Deal reporters David Weidner and Katie Anderson uncovered some glaring inconsistencies in Bernard's story and raised questions about his other forays into the airline industry and major league baseball.
Global has no listed phone number or Web site, a mysteriously shadowy press representative and a headquarters based out of Bernard's apartment in Clifton, New Jersey, yet its bid was taken seriously by at least four major news outlets. "So is Bernard serious or just a poor man's Howard Hughes armed with some media savvy, a fax machine and chutzpah?" write Weidner and Anderson. The Daily Deal has been tracking Bernard since he surfaced last fall with his bid on behalf of Global for TWA.
US Airways has apparently made up its own mind about Global. The airline announced it has no plans to entertain Global's latest offer.
