THE DEAL REVEALS THE LEADING PLAYERS AMONG WALL STREET'S FINANCIAL SPONSORS GROUPS
The Nov. 18 edition also carries a special report on the turnaround artists who are improving the survival rate of troubled companies
November 18, 2002--New York, N.Y.--The Deal (www.TheDeal.com), the newsweekly that serves the deal community with news, statistics and analysis, unveils in this week's cover story a guide to the players commanding a thriving area of investment banking: the financial sponsors groups that work with private equity shops and their portfolio companies.
Financial sponsors groups advise fund managers on acquisitions, bank loans and bond financings and have been responsible for facilitating some of the largest deals of the past year, including the sale of Qwest Communications International's directory business and Vivendi's sale of Houghton Mifflin. With private equity funds awash in cash, buyout firms are currently the most active buyers of corporate assets and private companies. The units profiled in The Deal's guide are part of Wall Street's largest firms - Salomon Smith Barney, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston, Lehman Brothers, UBS Warburg and Banc of America Securities.
"Any sense of what is really going on in the economy would be simple-minded beyond credibility if you ignored buyouts. The business now penetrates most of corporate America, particularly when most CEOs are too busy flipping through accounting manuals to try M&A deals," said editor in chief Robert Teitelman.
The Deal's Nov. 18 issue also features "Special Report: Faces of Restructuring," a selection of short profiles of players in the bankruptcy world who are operating in what is currently one of the hottest sectors of finance.
"Although we feature some of the best talent in the restructuring business, the professionals profiled in The Deal's special report are not a 'best-of' list, but rather part of our continuing attempt to present some of the personalities behind the deals," added Teitelman.
The 12 men and women, who lead the turnaround practices at 11 different firms, featured in "Special Report: Faces of Restructuring," include:
• Stephen H. Case, Davis Polk and Wardell • William Derrough, Jefferies & Co. • Marcia Goldstein, Weil, Gotshal & Manges • Michael Kramer, Greenhill & Co. • Deborah Hicks Midanek, Glass & Associates • Andrew Miller, Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin • Robert Miller, Financo • Dominic DiNapoli, FTI Consulting • Harold S. Novikoff, Wachtell, Lipton, Rose & Katz • Barry Ridings, Lazard • Terry Savage, Lazard • Bettina White, AlixPartners
