Tennenbaum Capital Markets' Mark Holdsworth discussed the economy, corporate debt and technology investing in a down market at the 2008 Distressed Investing conference. While Holdsworth feels the economy is entering a slow growth mode with "things being tough for a while" he doesn't yet think that thet wheels are coming off. As opposed to the last time around, many more companies have taken on debt, but don't have s full understanding of what "it means to have debt, thinking that those sources of capital are going to be the same as equity sources of capital, so it kind of a learning curve for them." Continue reading

Hugh Ray of Andrews & Kurth LLP spoke with The Deal at the 2008 Distressed Investing conference, Las Vegas, about what is on the horizon for companies that will have to be restructured in 2008. Ray is expecting a real boom in reorganization investing as the default rate has increased five-fold last year. It is not just the sub-prime loans causing problems but "an overabundance of credit extension" that is coming back to bite lenders now, Ray says. Continue reading
