At The Deal's M&A Outlook 2009 conference, Paul Parker, managing director and chairman and head of global M&A at Barclays Capital, spoke about where the overall economy and dealmaking are headed in 2009.
In 2009, Parker expects:
  • Boards are going to exert more control.
  • There will be questions and scrutiny on executive compensation.
  • There will be scrutiny over banks conflicts of interest .
  • There will be increased regulation and scrutiny of all market transactions.
  • More importance will be placed on integration synergies as more mergers mean a backlash of layoffs.
  • The importance and voracity of information on the market as misinformation can lead to panic trading.
