The Chinese government’s crackdown on pirated movies, CDs, books and other entertainment media doesn’t seem to have scared the locals off from buying the counterfeit goods. A nationwide survey, conducted by the China Publication Science Institute found that pirated goods accounted for 45.5% of media product purchases in 2005. The good news, if you can call it that, is that the percentage of pirated media purchased was actually down .5% from the last survey in 2003, the first drop in six years.

So what are the most coveted counterfeits? CDs led the way, followed by books, software and reference books. Other vital stats: 60% of respondents had heard the word copyright but didn’t understand what it meant, and 30% were unable to tell if a product was pirated. — Suzanne Stevens
