Seattle photo giant Getty Images Inc. recently completed its acquisition of WireImage, a provider of digital photography services, for about $200 million. Getty didn't have much luck with its $342 million bid for the online imaging business of Jupitermedia Corp., which is currently looking to make some of its own acquisitions. One analyst saw the bid as low as the two firms mutually agreed to end talks.

Perhaps that scuttled deal is one reason why Jeff Beyle, Getty Images' current general counsel, will become senior vice president of business development for the firm. Beyle has worked on a number of acquisitions and strategic alliances for Getty, but he is now being charged with devoting his full attention to the task. Succeeding him as general counsel is SVP John McKay, a former U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington. McKay, who resigned in January along with a number of his fellow U.S. attorneys, is a bit player in the congressional investigation of the U.S. Justice Department’s alleged mishandling of the dismissals. He previously served as a litigation partner at the Seattle law firm Lane Powell Spears Lubersky LLP. — Baz Hiralal

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
