Coca-Cola Co. is putting up $4.1 billion in cash for Energy Brands Inc., known as Glaceau. In August, Indian conglomerate Tata Group paid $677 million for a 30% stake for the Vitaminwater maker, at the time touting its great fit with Tata Tea's expanding global beverage business. Now it looks like Tata will instead reap a profit of $533 million on the deal.
For Coca-Cola, the deal offers a much-needed boost in the noncarbonated beverages market, in which rival PepsiCo Inc. has been excelling with brands such as Sobe, Aquafina and others. Tata, meanwhile, has some capital to redeploy in the global expansion of its many business units, outlined in this Q&A (on page 6) with the group's chief North American rep in the latest Corporate Dealmaker.
