EraGen BioSciences Inc., a venture-backed molecular diagnostics company, recently appointed L. Miguel Blanc as vice president of corporate development. Blanc was most recently manager of global business development for General Electric Co.'s $15 billion healthcare unit. There, he handled mergers and acquisitions, technology licensing and strategic collaborations for its $3 billion biosciences division. One transaction of note: Blanc completed the strategic assessment and due diligence for GE's entry into the life sciences market through its $9.5 billion acquisition of Amersham plc in 2004.

Before GE, Blanc worked at Amersham and Motorola Inc., where he was manager of business development in its network ventures division, the corporate private equity arm of Motorola, and a manager of strategy and business development for its life sciences business. Blanc already sees some growth opportunities at his new digs in Madison, Wis.: "I believe there are significant opportunities for EraGen in the rapidly growing molecular diagnostics market." — Baz Hiralal

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
