Hard to think of a better way to open a forum on dealmaking than with a keynote by Liberty Media Corp. CEO Greg Maffei. The former Microsoft Corp. CFO, who also did a stint as president and CFO of Oracle Corp., is one of the corporate world's top dealmakers, hired by media kingpin John Malone in late 2005 to turn a sprawling collection of assets into an operating company. Naturally, the restructuring has included plenty of deals, including the ones that added DirectTV and the Atlanta Braves to the Liberty portfolio. Maffei will talk about all this on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Denver Athletic Club when he kicks off the Dealmaker's Forum, an afternoon event organized by Corporate Dealmaker and ACG Denver. Then he'll take questions from the audience, and also from yours truly. If you can't make it, watch this blog to find out what we talked about. — Kenneth Klee

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
