Motorola Inc.'s chief dealmaker Donald McLellan has plenty on his plate. Not only is Carl Icahn circling with four
board nominees, speculation continues about what Motorola will do with its flagging cell-phone division since the company announced last week it was considering options. After initial
reports focused on a possible spinoff or sale, the
Financial Times is quoting sources saying that a joint venture or partnership for the handset division is more likely.
Either path would be well-worn territory for McLellan, who's been with the company since 1996 and has managed more than 150 transactions, including Motorola's $17 billion merger with General Instruments Corp. in 2000 and the spinoff of its chip business, Freescale Semiconductor, for $4.86 billion three years later. But with the prospect of four new board nominees looming, McLellan may find himself answering to a different slate of bosses whose vision for the company is unclear.
