indiancell012208.jpg According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the total wireless subscriber base in India stood at 269.3 million at the end of April, and during March and April, a total of 18.4 million new wireless subscribers were added. Some are expecting subscriber numbers of up to 484 million by 2011. Hoping to tap this emerging market, New Motion Inc. -- doing business as Atrinsic -- an Internet media and mobile entertainment company, formed a joint venture called Mango Network with India's Visionaire Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

Atrinsic's CEO Burton Katz said the "underlying dynamic of the JV has been driven by the 100,000-plus organic or 'free' unique visitors per month from India accessing and interacting with our content, which we have been able to monetize without additional costs and, therefore, contributes to our highly competitive acquisition model."

The press release even made mention of Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel Ltd. Bharti created "India with Airtel" -- a strategic partnership program focusing on providing leading international carriers an opportunity to partner with Airtel. Managed data and Internet services is among the telecom services offered. - Baz Hiralal
