As
Microsoft Corp, regroups after its abandoned Yahoo! Inc. bid, the company may be
looking to grow its Interactive Entertainment Business. The Redmond,
Wash., giant recently
reorganized the management structure
of the business to help it better respond to growth opportunities.
Shane Kim, who had been corporate vice president of Microsoft Game
Studios, has shifted into the newly created role of vice president for
strategy and corporate development. In his new role, Kim will develop
growth opportunities with partners across all parts of the global
Interactive Entertainment Business, which includes the game studio,
Xbox, Xbox Live and Games for Windows division.
As we
reported
previously in Corporate Dealmaker, the gaming sector is underpinned by
a web of alliances, and Microsoft Game Studios has been a major player,
sometimes aligning itself with game developers, other times buying them
outright. Most recently, Kim led MGS' 2006 acquisition Lionhead
Studios, creator of the "Fable" series for the Xbox.
Microsoft
Game Studios veteran Phil Spencer will lead the studio. Both Spencer
and Kim will report to Don Mattrick, SVP of the Interactive
Entertainment Business.
