General Motors Corp.'s alliance with three dozen utility companies is the second deal in less than two weeks aimed at building a plug-in network for electric cars. GM announced Tuesday that it was
hooking up with electric companies in 40 states to collaborate on efforts to support the Chevrolet Volt and Saturn Vue, electric cars GM plans to introduce in about two years. The alliance aims to ensure compatibility between the vehicles and the plug-in outlets that will charge them.
This deal follows the formation of a
joint venture announced July 10 between Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA to explore the infrastructure and related organizations necessary to build a network of charging stations.
The deals underscore one of the biggest challenges facing automakers as they begin introducing alternative-energy vehicles: building a fueling network to keep cars rolling. Making it work means coordinating not only automakers and energy companies, but also state and local governments. These two deals are a good start.

I am part of a campaign aimed at General Motors to become Green Motors and become a hybrid/electric car manufacturer. Check it out here: http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/save-general-motors-and-the-planet-at-the-same-time
General Motors is falling apart, losing billions, and in jeopardy of going out of business. If we can convince them that there is a viable market for them taking drastic action to convert their cars and trucks to being the most environmentally efficient in the world, they have nothing to lose by unconditionally embracing the green movement.
