We've been writing over the past week about how companies seem to be
spinning out products or businesses with increasing frequency. Well, we've got another deal to toss in the load. As the folks over at
Deal Journal report, GlaxoSmithKline plc is considering spinning off some of its early-stage drugs into a separate company.
The spinout strategy seems particularly attractive to drug companies. In February, pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca plc
spun out its gastrointestinal disorders unit into a new company called Alberio Pharma, and on July 8, Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc.
spun out its medical products division into a venture- and private equity-backed subsidiary.
