As we
noted on Thursday,
strategic alliances are seen by many dealmakers as a necessary
nuisance. They're a pain to manage, but are a requirement in today's
competitive global marketplace. In the current issue of The Deal
newsweekly, Scott Wilson and Doug Tuttle of Deloitte Consulting LLP
offer
advice on how to make alliances less painful and, ultimately, more successful.
Wilson
and Tuttle advise potential partners to make the motivations and
objectives behind the alliance "completely transparent," develop a
sound governance mechanism, make trust a priority and to strive for
"comparable learning capacities to avoid imbalances that can lead to
competitive disadvantage."
Considering the high failure rate for alliances -- upwards of 50% by most counts -- the column is worth a look.
