united_airlines.jpegWe normally limit our movers and shakers announcements to new appointments in corporate development. But with bankrupt-inducing fuel costs and industry-wide consolidation causing upheaval in the airline industry, Kathryn Mikelis' appointment as senior vice president and chief financial officer for UAL Corp., the parent of United Airlines, seemed worth a mention. In her new role, Mikelis will oversee M&A and corporate development, in addition to the more traditional CFO responsibilities.

Mikelis has been with United since 1994 and previously headed up investor relations and financial planning. She takes over as CFO on the heel of a lawsuit filed by UAL against its pilot union. As The Deal's Lou Whiteman reported in July, UAL alleges pilots staged a sickout that led to hundreds of canceled flights. Labor strife is one reason rivals Delta Air Lines Inc. and Continental Airlines Inc. have rebuffed merger overtures by UAL in recent years. - Suzanne Stevens
