Thanksgiving is to Pepperidge Farm what Christmas is to Toys-R-Us. So what better time to see what the company, best known for its cookies, has been up to. Pepperidge Farm, which was founded in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin and stuffed into the Campbell Soup Co. in a 1961 acquisition, doesn't do a lot of deals. However, the company did announce some partner news in November. Through its Australian sister company Arnott's, Pepperidge Farm introduced the tasty
Tim Tam brand cookie in America. (If you've ever had a Tim Tam, you know this is a big, big deal.)
Meanwhile, Pepperidge Farm parent
Campbell did a few deals in 2008. In July, the company acquired the Wolfgang Puck soup business from Country Gourmet Foods. In March, it sold its Godiva chocolate business to Turkish food company Yildiz Holdings AS for $815 million, and in May it completed the sale of its Australian salty snacks brands to a group of Australian investors.
Campbell's outlook for 2009 wasn't so hot, though. Campbell beat analysts predictions in announcing
quarterly results on November 24, but it warned the strong dollar would dampen earnings and sales by up to 5% in 2009.
