military_training.jpegMilitary contractor DynCorp International has recruited Craig Reed to serve as senior vice president of strategic development, a newly created position. Reed previously was VP of strategy and planning for the ISR Systems division of Northrop Grumman, and also previously worked at Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Energy. At DynCorp, Reed will oversee M&A, strategic initiatives and market intelligence. DynCorp -- which provides security, law enforcement training, aviation services, base operations and logistics support to government and civilian clients -- also hired Tony Smeraglinolo as president of its International Security Services business. Smeraglinolo, who joins from L-3 Communications, will oversee ISS business development, strategic planning and financial management.

DynCorp is heavily invested in Iraq and Afghanistan, providing a number of mission-critical services in those countries, including training police officers and constructing military bases. The hirings of Reed and Smeraglinolo could foreshadow a strategic shift as DynCorp -- along with other defense contractors -- looks to diversify its portfolio as U.S. forces are drawn down in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as defense spending is either cut or redistributed. As Bloomberg reported in November, Boeing Co., the nation's second-largest defense contractor, is looking to acquire companies operating in homeland security, intelligence gathering and logistics to offset a projected drop in weapons spending.  - Suzanne Stevens

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
