Riding high on the success of its innovative mobile-gaming controller, tech startup Zeemote Inc. has landed former Virgin Media Inc. dealmaker Ernie Cormier (pictured) as chief executive. Not only has Zeemote's flagship JS1 Controller generated buzz in the mobile-gaming community, the company has secured pivotal relationships with leading handset makers Nokia Oyj and Sony Ericsson, and mobile network operators Vodafone Group plc and Telefonica Movil.

Still, bagging Cormier is a bit of a coup for the year-old startup. Cormier was most recently managing director for group strategy and corporate development at Virgin Media, where he led the company's consumer division, a $6.5 billion business with more than 6,000 employees and 9.5 million customers.

But like a lot of corporate tech executives, Cormier was lured by the chance to shape and execute strategy at a dynamic startup. As he told Wirelessweek, the opportunity at Zeemote fit the bill. - Suzanne Stevens

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
