If telecom supplier Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE:NT) should liquidate instead of re-emerging from bankruptcy, it looks like there's plenty to sell.
According to The Wall Street Journal and other media reports, Nortel
is in talks about selling its enterprise unit and wireless equipment business. Nokia Siemens Networks, Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), Cisco Systems Inc. (NSDQ:CSCO) and private equity firm Gores Group have reportedly looked at the goods.
And though Cisco looked but reportedly isn't interested in the enterprise unit, there are other assets to consider. As we discussed in a
recent article in The Deal on strategic acquirers contemplating deals for distressed assets, Nortel last fall put its Metro Ethernet unit on the block. It found no takers then, but a liquidation sale may be another story.
It isn't just Nortel business units that are drawing attention. Steve Hoffman, CEO of
Thinkfire Services USA Ltd., the intellectual property advisory and brokerage firm, says he's keeping an eye on Nortel's IP portfolio during the bankruptcy process. He's probably not the only one.
