After Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) completes its $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth in the third quarter, it will retain eight senior executives from Wyeth and
create two distinct research organizations to capitalize on their respective strengths in pharma and biotech.
A Wall Street Journal report points out that previous Pfizer deals have
resulted in years of stalled research efforts. But Martin Mackay, who
leads global research and development for Pfizer,
thinks Pfizer is better prepared for this integration.
Mackay will lead the pharma-therapeutics research group, which focuses on traditional pharmaceuticals. Mikael Dolsten, who is president of Wyeth research, will lead the bio-therapeutics research group, which covers so-called "large-molecule research," including vaccines. Both executives will report to Pfizer CEO Jeff Kindler.
Pfizer's announcement includes appointments in those divisions and mentions plans to source new technologies among other things by working with the business development team.
Chief financial officer Frank D'Amelio is leading the integration on behalf of Pfizer. -
