CDLadderSmall.pngJohn B. Sanfilippo & Sons Inc. (NASDAQ:JBSS) has hired Robert J. Sarlls as vice president of strategy and business development. Sarlls will work to develop and execute strategy and lead M&A, joint venture and alliance activity for the owner of the Fisher Nut brand.

A quick news search doesn't reveal much recent dealmaking, other than an alliance JBSS announced on May 27 with food redistributor DOT Foods that will allow vendors to consolidate purchases of the Fisher products.

But that could change. Sarlls arrives with a deep network of potential partners and possibly targets. Most recently he was a director for RBC Capital Markets, the investment banking arm of the Royal Bank of Canada (NYSE:RY), where he worked with midsized food companies and private equity clients. He also founded the merchant banking firm Strategic Food Capital Partners and previously was a vice president with Rabobank, one of the largest financial institutions focused on food and agribusiness.

News of Sarlls' new job comes two weeks after BMO Capital Markets hired a trio of senior Banc of America Securities LLC bankers to join its food and consumer group -- a sign perhaps the food sector is ripe for dealmaking. - Suzanne Stevens

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
