Time Warner board may decide AOL's fate

questionmark125x100.gifTime Warner Inc.'s (NYSE:TWX) board will meet Thursday, and there's speculation it will finalize plans to spin off AOL LLC. Time Warner has hinted the separation is coming -- but has offered few details on when or how it will be accomplished. TechCrunch, citing sources close to AOL, is reporting those details will be hammered out at the board meeting.

We do know that Tim Armstrong, the former Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) exec hired as AOL chief executive in March, would lead an independent AOL. And he's wasted little time building his management team. Among other hires, Armstrong in April lured his former Google colleague Jeff Levick to lead global advertising and strategy.

Of course, Time Warner and AOL were joined in a 2001 megamerger many deemed the deal of the century, one that symbolized the convergence of traditional and new media. For a reminder of how the deal went down -- and the jubilation and skepticism it prompted -- check out this installment of Decade of The Deal, our series commemorating The Deal's 10-year anniversary. - Suzanne Stevens
