AOL LLC chief executive Tim Armstrong (pictured) isn't letting his company's spin off from parent Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX) distract him from doing deals.
AOL on Thursday acquired Patch Media Corp and Going Inc.
Both companies allow users to search for content specific to local communities, an area that will be a "core area of focus and investment for AOL," said Armstrong in a statement. Community-specific content should also appeal to advertisers, which could help boost AOL's
display advertising business, which the company sees as its best opportunity for growth.
The acquisitions come as AOL prepares for independence.
Time Warner announced on May 28 it was spinning out AOL nearly nine years after the companies merged. For a reminder of how that deal went down, check out
