Stephen Girsky, a one-time Wall Street analyst who now runs his own consulting firm, was named Thursday to the board of a revitalized General Motors Corp. as a representative of the United Auto Workers.
Girsky is a well-known power player inside the domestic auto industry. He was lured away from Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), where he was a managing director and senior analyst, to serve as special adviser to GM CEO Rick Wagoner in 2006. More recently, as an independent consultant, he assisted UAW president Ron Gettelfinger in concession talks with the automakers. He also assisted GM in its pending sale of its Saturn unit to Roger Penske.
On GM's board Girsky will represent the interests of the UAW's retiree healthcare trust, which will own 17.5% of the company' once it emerges from Chapter 11 protection as soon as later this summer. He will join former AT&T Inc. (NYSE:ATT) CEO Ed Whitacre, who last week was named the company's new chairman, along with six existing directors and five to be named by the U.S. and Canadian governments. -
