hand_shake.jpegDigimarc Corp. (NASDAQ:DMRC) and the Nielsen Co. are expanding an existing alliance with the creation of two joint ventures. The first JV, which will be 51% owned by digital technology maker Digimarc, will develop products to help owners of copyrighted content and other intellectual property track royalty payments. The second venture, to be 51% owned by Nielsen, will develop "enhanced television products." Digimarc and Nielsen have worked together since 2007 through a patent licensing agreement.

By combining Digimarc's watermarking and other IP protection technologies with Nielsen's consumer and business data, the companies believe the JVs will provide "tremendous opportunities for us to deliver innovative transaction-based solutions for new media businesses, including mobile."

With just about every media company looking for ways to monetize digital content, demand is high for such technology. Meaning the JVs will have plenty of competition. - Suzanne Stevens
