CDLadderSmall.pngA surge in alternative energy dealmaking has for months been predicted by energy analysts, lawyers, consultants and a cadre of other industry watchers. It's no surprise then that GridPoint Inc. has hired an experienced dealmaker to help position it for growth. John B. Spirtos has joined GridPoint, a maker of smart energy grid technologies and software, to lead corporate development and strategy, which will include corporate partnerships and M&A.

"His leadership will play a critical role in our strategy to build or buy best-of-breed technologies," said GridPoint chief executive Peter L. Corsell in a statement.

Spirtos' resume is heavy on corporate development expertise in the communications industry. He has held senior corp dev and strategy roles at billing and messaging software provider Comverse Technology, clearinghouse and directory services provider NeuStar Inc., and switching and transport equipment maker Corvis Corp.

With little energy industry experience, it's likely Spirtos' M&A chops were a big part of why he landed the job. A signal perhaps that deals could spark soon at GridPoint. - Suzanne Stevens

Even in a period when things like toxic credit default swaps and noxious structured investment vehicles dominate the conversation in many parts of the deal community, people are still willing to take the time to recognize skill and achievement in the strategic transactions that help those companies adapt and grow.
