Leaked GM memo details organizational changes

A memo detailing a plethora of organizational changes at General Motors Co., leaked to jalopnik.com, shows the once bankrupt company will focus on more global alliances. It names seven people, including current director of global business development Greg Hagy, that will "support the executive committee in long-term strategy development" and report to John Smith, group vice president, corporate planning and alliances. Alliances and joint ventures are one part of a three-tier focus for the group.

The memo also names executives who will retire from GM's various operations. New technology is key for the New GM, which chose LG Chem Ltd., the South Korean chemicals giant, to supply it with lithium-ion batteries for its Chevy Volt. Last week, GM said it began work at the Michigan facility where the batteries will be manufactured.

DetroitNews.com had contents of the memo on its site on Saturday. While in charge of the new corporate planning and alliance group, Smith is also GM's chief negotiator for the sale of its European operations unit Adam Opel GmbH. - Baz Hiralal
