Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE:NOC) has named Edward Swallow as
vice president of business development for the defense contractor's civil systems division. Swallow (pictured) previously was VP of business acquisition process and proposal operations for the information systems sector, which Northrop is downsizing in response to concerns of conflicts of interest.
Los Angeles-based Northrop hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS) and Credit Suisse Group AG (NYSE:CS) to shop its military advisory unit, Tasc, which is part of the $10 billion-sales information systems group. The unit, which has attracted interest from
several private equity firms (The Deal Pipeline subscription required), provides engineering services and analysis to government, military and intelligence clients. As The Deal's Lou Whiteman recently
reported (The Deal Pipeline subscription required), that advice sometimes puts Tasc in a position to evaluate projects on which Northrop is bidding.
Like Tasc, the civil systems unit that Swallow now calls home is also part of the information systems group. It's not clear whether Swallow is helping with the Tasc auction or whether he'll be pursuing acquisitions to build Northrop's presence in the civil marketplace. His appointment, however, does signal that the firm is committed to the civil sector and sees potential for growth. - Suzanne Stevens
