Staff members at Knight Ridder Inc. newspapers in Philadelphia were told Thursday that they are now responsible for the care of company-owned plants in their offices, according to an internal memo posted at Poynteronline. In a cost-cutting measure, officials decided to terminate its outside plant service contract and leave it up to employees to keep the greenery green. This approach is just the sort of hard-nosed decision likely to attract buyers to the Knight Ridder auction. Next move: Grow revenue by boosting the vending machine price of Snickers bars to $50 each. Knight Ridder shares fell 0.63% to close at $63.60.—Jeffrey Kanige
