Maytag fights back

Maytag Corp. fired back at two members of its home-state congressional delegation Friday, complaining that Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Leonard Boswell just don’t understand the company’s planned sale to Whirlpool Corp. The two Democrats Thursday asked regulators to block the deal, arguing that the combined entity would be too big. Would not, Maytag countered. Harkin and Boswell also insisted that the acquisition would result in a loss of jobs in Iowa. Would not, Maytag explained. Maytag shares gained 0.45% Friday to close at $17.76.—Jeffrey Kanige
