The Labor Department reported Tuesday that employee compensation rose by 3.1% in 2005, the lowest rate in nine years. That figure may help explain why a recent survey by Salary.com found that 65% of U.S. workers are unhappy in their jobs and seriously thinking about moving on. In fact, the leading cause of the dissatisfaction is inadequate pay. Of course, with so many people looking for new jobs, there is certainly no shortage of labor to drive up salaries. And the Labor Department report suggests that nobody is getting a raise. All of which means that the smartest strategy for enhancing one’s income is buying a lottery ticket. —Jeffrey Kanige
