Latrobe Brewing could make ethanol

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

RollingRock.jpgSome people have compared Rolling Rock with gasoline, so it should come as little surprise to those folks that the old Latrobe Brewing Co.'s lone brewery in Western Pennsylvania could be sold to a craft brewer that freelances as an ethanol maker on the side. InBev NA, which sold the rights to the Rolling Rock brand for $82 million to Anheuser Busch last month, is reportedly negotiating with City Brewing Co. of Lacrosse, Wis. to sell the plant, which was not part of the Anheuser Busch deal. Anheuser Busch is expected to move Rolling Rock production to its Newark, N.J. brewery, which primarily produces Budweiser and Bud Light. City Brewing sells craft beers under the City and Lacrosse brands, which are practically unknown in the Northeast. However, in addition to occasionally producing ethanol for Tulsa, Ok.-based Williams Partners, the company also is a contractor for other beverage makers like Arizona Ice Tea, and Mike's Hard Lemonade. Of course, should the plant be used to make ethanol, there will be plenty of green bottles to fill.—Matthew Wurtzel
