Grupo Televisa licks its wounds

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Grupo Televisa, the Mexican broadcaster, at first appeared to be a sore loser when it lost the auction to buy Univision, but it seems that time may be healing the wounds. Its executives recently broke bread with the consortium that won the bidding in an effort to discuss keeping its stake in the Spanish language broadcaster, according to The New York Times. Immediately after losing the auction last month, the Mexican broadcaster threatened to sell its 11% stake in the American company. It also threatened to end a long-term syndication deal that provides Univision with TV shows. The deal isn't set to expire until 2017. Of course, the syndication deal could be a thorn for Televisa should it seek to buy another Spanish broadcaster in the U.S. Probably realizing that the syndication deal is iron-clad, Televisa agreed to meet Univision's new owners in hopes it can stay involved in the lucrative U.S. TV market. —Matthew Wurtzel
