Buyout firm Fortress Investment Group LLC's platform Gatehouse Media Inc. is on the prowl for more deals, according to The Boston Globe. The newspaper publisher recently paid $230 million for Community Newspaper Co., the Boston-area publisher of The MetroWest Daily News and 93 related weeklies that have bounced from owner to owner more times than a pinball. CNC's most recent owner was Patrick Purcell, the long-time publisher of the Globe's chief rival The Boston Herald. Purcell bought the chain from Fidelity Investment's private equity unit Fidelity Ventures. Other owners have included Harte-Hanks, which no longer owns newspapers. The deal expanded Gatehouse to include 75 dailies. Gatehouse recently filed to go public, which is where The Globe found info about its expansion plans in an SEC filing. —Matthew Wurtzel
