Couture brands covet Aston Martin?

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Subaru has L.L. Bean-appointed sedans and wagons. Toyota has Coach-appointed Lexus cars and SUVs. Ford even has the Eddie Bauer edition Explorer SUV. So why not a Louis Vitton- or Montblanc-appointed Aston Martin? Only a day after Ford announced it may sell its other English luxury car brand, bloggers are all trying to handicap who would want the brand best known for its role in James Bond films. The writers at Autoblog and CAR discuss the prospects of France's LVMH and Switzerland's Richemont, best known for Cartier watches and Montblanc pens, making a bid for the car company. Neither company has experience making cars. Their most advanced products are watches, which in some cases could have as many if not more moving parts than a car. However, luxury cars are as much about engineering as they are about marketing, image and perception, and both companies know a great deal more about that than Ford. —Matthew Wurtzel
