Just what troubled Ford Motor Co. and General Motors need, a frivilous lawsuit. California, which has the most stringent emissions standards in the country, is now suing the world's six largest automakers for contributing to global warming. Attorney General Bill Lockyer's suit is demanding that the companies, which also includes DaimlerChrysler, Honda, Nissan and Toyota, pay for environmental damage caused by the emissions of their vehicles, which by some estimates account for 30% of all emissions in California. Of course, the suit doesn't make much sense. All six make cars that meet the state's standards, so they are abiding by the law. However, Lockyer's 15-page complaint argues that the companies are violating nuisance laws. It seems as if Lockyer is attempting to establish new law by circumventing the legislature and governor. So what is really compelling Lockyer's suit? Politics. Lockyer is currently running for state treasurer. One thing is certain, at least Lockyer doesn't drive around in a Hummer like Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The environmentally concious Lockyer owns a Toyota Prius hybrid and drives a state-owned Ford Escape Hybrid SUV.—Matthew Wurtzel
