Ebbers' last day

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Disgraced former WorldCom chief Bernard Ebbers spent his last day of freedom with his wife and doing what he loved best — making deals, of course. His last deal as a free man involved selling one of his remaining assets, Angelina Plantation, reportedly one of the biggest working farms in the U.S., according to a New York Post article. Ebbers received $32 million for the 29,000-acre farm, which produces rice and cotton. According to court documents, the buyer reportedly was George Soros's Ag Services. After founding telecommunications company Worldcom, Ebbers used his fortune buying real estate across the South. The Post reports that the Angelina Plantation was the crown jewel of his portfolio. All that remains of his real estate holdings is a modest 3-bedroom home in Jackson, Miss. Ebbers was found guilty of fraud in the $11 billion bankruptcy of WorldCom. This morning, the 65-year-old drove his white Mercedes to the Federal prison in Oakdale, La. where he will serve his 25-year sentence. Of course, he'll still be doing deals in prison, except the currency will probably change.—Matthew Wurtzel
