Police Blotter: Nov. 15, 2006

Former Computer Associates chairman and chief executive Sanjay Kumar's partner in crime, chief salesman Stephen Richards, could have a cell mate with a resume of offenses — he's never seen in the corporate world — that includes murder or rape. Richards will be serving hard time, as a federal judge on Nov. 14 sentenced him to seven years in federal prison, for his involvement in fraudulently backdating sales figures followed by lying to investigators to cover his tracks. Because the 41-year-old is a native of New Zealand, he would not be eligible for placement in a minimum-security federal prison work camp, which most U.S.-born white-collar convicts are eligible for, nor will he be able to serve the last part of his sentence in a halfway house — because he would be a theoretical flight risk, Richards' attorney said in a Newsday article. Richards also will be deported to New Zealand after serving out his term. The former salesman contributed to a scheme lead by Kumar in which several billion dollars in sales were fraudulently backdated to meet Wall Street expectations of profit.— Gerald Magpily
