Compact_fluorescent_spiral_bulb.pngBack in 2001, California’s energy problems figured prominently in the recall of a governor—Democrat Gray Davis—and the scandal surrounding an energy giant—pariah Enron Corp. Now, state Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is getting serious about preventing future shortages by sponsoring a bill to ban the use of incandescent light bulbs. By some measures, switching to more efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs would save enough power to offset the increased demand from electric cars. Nonetheless, the proposal leaves several questions unanswered, chief among them: What kind of bulb appeared above Levine’s head when he got the idea?—Jeffrey Kanige
