Donnelley keeps up its dealmaking ways

Completing what it calls a trilogy of transactions, printing services company R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. agreed Wednesday, Jan. 3, to acquire Von Hoffman, which prints books and catalogues, from Visant Corp. for $412.5 million in cash.

The previous two volumes of Chicago-based Donnelley’s trilogy were its agreement in October to buy printing services provider Banta Corp. for about $1.3 billion, and its commitment in December to buy Waterloo, Wis.-based catalogue printer Perry Judd's Holdings Inc. for $176 million.

2006 was an acquisitive year for RR Donnelley. The company agreed to buy Canadian Bank Note Co. Ltd.'s financial printing operations for an undisclosed price in September, but some of its previous targets were business process outsourcers. In April, the company paid $250 million for New York-based OfficeTiger Holdings Inc., which processes mail, scans and binds documents, as well as manages records for businesses. In December 2005, it picked up a U.K. outsourcing services company, Critical Mail Continuity Services Ltd., for an undisclosed sum.

The company bought commercial printer and outsourcing company Moore Wallace Inc. for $2.8 billion in equity and $900 million in assumed debt in 2004.
