Ziff Davis puts up "for sale" sign

Ziff_Davis_Sale.jpgWhile most people were busy setting up their new computers and video game consoles over the holidays, magazine publisher Ziff Davis Media quietly hired Lehman Brothers to sell its Consumer Small Business Group, best known for PC Magazine, and its Game Group, best known for Electronics Gaming Monthly, according to the blog Paid Content. Now, as most people finally tear themselves away from their new toys, a new report from Web site GameDaily.com suggests Ziff Davis will separate its video game Web site 1up.com from the game magazines unit and sell it to Viacom's MTV Networks. Adding 1up.com to its stable of Web sites, which currently includes GameTrailers.com, will better position Viacom for the page views of 18- to 34 year-old men, who are the largest audience for the $10 billion game industry. In addition, the move could deepen Viacom's direct competition with rival media giant News Corp., which bought gaming Web site IGN, one of 1up.com's main rivals.—Matthew Wurtzel
