Five dollars. That’s how much Delta Air Lines Inc. and several other carriers added to their ticket prices last week in an effort to deal with the high cost of fuel and salted almonds. It doesn’t sound like a high price to pay for the health of an important industry, but it was apparently too much. Delta said Monday it had rescinded the increase after it “failed to gain traction among enough airlines to overcome competitive pressure,” according to Reuters. In other words, travelers were booking flights on cheaper carriers and pocketing the five bucks. Good for consumers, but bad for the struggling airline industry. Several more carriers might have already gone into bankruptcy, but for the fact that Maria Bartiromo is flying commercial again. —Jeffrey Kanige
