If GM buys Chrysler, then Toyota should buy Nissan

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Chevy TahoeThe speculation prompted by Automotive News that General Motors Corp. is going to buy Chrysler from DaimlerChrysler is an absurd idea. Equally absurd would be the notion of Toyota buying Nissan. However, when you consider the news that probably spawned the GM-Chrysler match up, then the Toyota-Nissan deal would follow the same flawed logic. The likely cause of the rumor is GM's reported talks to lend the technology behind the Chevy Tahoe large sport utility vehicle (pictured at right) to Chrysler, which will use it to build its own massive road warrior. Based on such thin sourcing, one could launch the speculation that Toyota is interested in buying Nissan. Where would that rumor come from? Try Toyota's agreement to lend its so-called Hybrid Synergy Drive that powers its Prius for Nissan's forthcoming Altima Hybrid. See how easy it is to start a rumor? —Matthew Wurtzel
