Tom Freston: champion of the disabled

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Former Viacom CEO Tom Freston remains busy by championing the cause of learning disabled students. The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear Freston's little-known, but contentious case. Freston is seeking repayment for his learning disabled son's education. Freston is suing not because he can't afford the $36,700 annual tuition, but for the benefit of parents of lesser means, his attorney Neal Rossenberg told the New York Sun. A lower court initially ruled in favor of the City of New York, but an appeals court overturned the decision. Following the appeal court victory, the city compensated Freston, who reportedly donated the sum to the Stephen Gaynor School for children with learning disabilities. The school has reportedly taken Freston's donation to start a program to tutor public school students who have learning disabilities. —Matthew Wurtzel
