AmerisourceBergen grabs NY's Bellco

AmerisourceBergen Corp. announced this morning that it is buying privately-held Bellco Health for approximately $235 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter, subject to regulatory approvals. Bellco, of Amityville, N.Y., is a distributor of branded and generic pharmaceuticals and has annualized revenues of approximately $2.0 billion. Bellco is a major pharmaceutical distributor in New York, where it services independent retail community pharmacies. Nationally, they market and sell generic pharmaceuticals to individual retail pharmacies, and provide pharmaceutical products and services to dialysis clinics.

Valley Forge, Pa.-based AmerisourceBergen, considered one of the big three among U.S. drug wholesalers behind McKesson Corp. and Cardinal Health Inc., recently signed a deal to acquire IgG of America Inc., a specialty pharmacy and infusion services business, for $35 million. In October, the pharma giant completed the acquisition of Health Advocates Inc. of Tampa, Fla., for about $83 million in cash. Also in ’06, AmerisourceBergen completed its purchase of Network for Medical Communications & Research LLC for $90 million on Feb. 9.

On March 21, subsidiary AmerisourceBergen Canada Corp., finalized its deal for privately-held Asenda Pharmaceutical Supplies Ltd. and a related entity for $18 million.
