SkyBus: The Wal-Mart of air travel

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

SkyBus Airlines Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, is inching closer to takeoff. The startup carrier looking to undercut low-cost leaders JetBlue and Southwest reportedly has told the Department of Transportation it expects to launch service on Sunday, May 20, and has requested permission to begin selling tickets. No word on where the so-called ultra-low cost carrier will serve, but rumors suggest destinations will include secondary airports in Southern California, Florida and may be even Boston. In order to achieve its goals of serving the Wal-Mart shopper, the airline really is taking a cue from the bus business by selling advertising on the side of the plane — no word on whether ads will decorate the interior too.—Matthew Wurtzel
