The Deal on deck: Cisco-Webex

Cisco Systems is paying $3.2 billion to acquire Internet conferencing technology provider WebEx Communications in a deal that will significantly expand the buyer’s product offerings for small and medium-sized businesses while also addressing its longstanding goal of offering more unified communications equipment.

Analysts said the purchase price is generous, but still reasonable for a company that makes such a critical next-generation communications technology.

“Cisco has been angling to have a presence in this market,” said one industry watcher, who added that WebEx offered one of the few opportunities to expand through acquisition.
