The Deal on deck: Tough times ahead for Palm

Palm Inc. seemed to enjoy the last laugh after widespread rumors of a takeover by Motorola failed to materialize, and Motorola instead announced a severe slowdown in its own cell phone business.

But the iconic handheld device maker is not in the clear.

At a time when almost every cell phone and computer hardware maker is offering or developing a device that’s superior to the once-unique Treo, industry observers say Palm will inevitably be the subject of more consolidation talk and is in for a tough time if it remains independent.

The problem is that other companies—from Nokia to Samsung to Research in Motion—with more R&D and more marketing might are also committed to building a Swiss Army knife of mobile computing. And Apple’s forthcoming iPhone has the entire industry frightened.
