Ford turnaround aims to simplify offerings

120805_fordmustang%2C0.jpgThe Detroit News obtained a Ford Motor Co. internal document entitled "Ford North America — 2007 Objectives at a Glance," which outlines four major turnaround objectives from CEO Alan Mulally. The goals are:

  • resizing the company to match the reduced demand for its vehicles
  • accelerating product development while reducing manufacturing complexity
  • securing financing
  • improving teamwork

The first goal more specifically means it is time for the company to scale back some of its product offerings. Currently, a buyer interested in a Mustang is faced with 16,000 different combinations. The realization that there are too many choices came to Mulally when he went to purchase an Econonline for his mother's senior center, where he was met with 185 different options, according to The Detroit News. However, there is no indication that Mullaly has targeted any specific brands for sale or closure. —Matthew Wurtzel
